All our natural Bocce Blends have a base of oyster shells from ancient carpenter oysters. The shells are a small and fragile variety deposited over thousands of years on the bottom of the San Francisco Bay. For more than a century, this unique resource has been utilized to supply a number of industries including the worldwide demand for our special Bocce Blends.

Over the past years, there have been myriad attempts to study and develop the "perfect" bocce playing surface—both natural and synthetic. From a simple 1/4 minus track fine system to a more elaborate mixture of oyster shells and loam, they all can work in one way or another. After all, you can play at the beach or on your backyard lawn—as long as the ball will roll, you have accomplished bocce ball, right? Well, for some, track fines and decomposed granite is ok. It's also about as cheap as it gets. For many, however, rolling on compacted rock, sod, sand or many other bumpy, uneven, impervious surfaces just won't cut it.

At Bocce Builders of America, we see the game in a different way. You can play tennis on raw concrete and pavers. You can play soccer on dirt fields and asphalt driveways. You can also play baseball in your courtyard or in a corn field. However, to truly enjoy the entire experience of a sport you need acrylics, clay and painted lines for tennis, an infield, outfield and bases for baseball, and a finely trimmed special grass for soccer. These elements keep the games safe, fun and put everyone on the same playing field.

With the help of soils engineers, geological studies and a long lists of tests performed on various combinations of materials, we have developed three specific bocce blends which take into consideration the short and long term compaction density of the material, the drainage (better known as percolation), the ability for the material to retain moisture and the maintenance involved to keep it looking great. The final result of each of our three blends incorporates these parameters to achieve a slower roll, a medium speed and faster surface when properly installed, compacted and hydrated.
